Introduction to laser cutting, Mapbox, & data epresentation

Activity 1

learning to use Mapbox learning about layers & experimenting with contour lines street level exploration exploring projection types using satellite view with other layers discovering interactions our designs getting engraved seeing how the machine works laser cutting process final pieces pieces assembled side view top view engraving closeup small mark in corner of piece the pieces got stuck - not enough sanding small burnt spot the data as its default exploring heatmaps changing thickness by type changing thickness by status changing colour & thickness bivariate map on satellite view trying all heatmap - less intuitive way to display this specific data heat map by status

Activity 2

overhead view of Georgetown in 1950
might make map based on historical changes
https://mdl.library.utoronto.ca/collections/air-photos/1950-halton-hills-air-photos/index illustration of the same Georgetown area
same purpose
http://www.thegeorgetownvault.com/older-pictures1.html Mapbox map of Toronto along the lake
possible base for laser cut map my first world map attempt attempting to make a world map base in Illustrator correctly made world map in Mapbox adjusted Mapbox file to use filters all the layers used in the final + experimentation the projection I used to get the most accurate map finalized Illustrator file screen while laser cutting while it's engraving while it's cutting all the finished pieces just the base just the countries everything put together I had to make new pieces that were missing this section didn't cut through all the way
I had to use a box cutter I have no idea where this piece came from but at a distance it fills the shape gluing it together fully painted piece I made other handmade piece fully painted depth difference final piece

Spatial Workshop 1

Bridge between B wing - C wing
Primary connection point between wings
Has exterior & interior supports
Creates seamless flow through building J wing Entrance
Primary entrance for J wing or H wing
Uncommon to have round buildings, gives unique silhouette
Has lots of glass so there's plenty of natural light Downstairs Hall in D wing
Has drama classes & connects to H wing
Not enough lighting & exposed pipes are unsettling
Seems unfinished

Spatial Workshop 2

Space used: D wing basement hallway
Issues: lighting, pipes, blank walls, lack of colour, too industrial

Goal: make space feel more inviting
- replace pipes & vents with ceiling tiles
- overhead lighting
- redo stars in different colour tile
- add artwork to walls
- replace doors with ones that have windows Goal: fill empty space
- add screen or artwork to the end of the hallway Goal: make space more inviting & accessible
- add closer clock
- overhead lighting
- more art or signage around classroom doors
